SAFETY ADVISORY COMMITTEE

February 21, 2008
University
Health Center

Attendees:   Michelle Wygle, Janice Radcliff, Sue Martinez, Kay Coots, Dana Winitzky, Hall O’Regan, Michelle Gillette, Anne Mattson, Ernie Pressman

January minutes were approved.

Accident and injury reports were reviewed and discussed.

There were two loss claims in January.

Michelle Gillette reported that many of the slips and falls were due to the inclement weather in the last week of January.  The committee commended Facilities Services for doing an excellent job clearing the snow and ice.  Sue said that Housing staff had used a deicing product and did a very good job around the dorms.

Subcommittee Report

Physical Education and Recreation was inspected on January 29th.  Janice reported that the custodial staff has done an outstanding job.  She said that they did find a number housekeeping issues and some citable violations in the maintenance department.  Kay shared that a letter went out to PE&R and to Facilities Services.  There has been no response to date and Kay will contact Molly Kennedy to follow up.

Old Business

Hall and Sue shared that the Fire and Spice is having problems with grease and grime still being tracked from the grill area.  Kay said that the custodial floor care staff had been working on a different area that is located by the walk-in cooler.  Sue said in order to stop the tracking employees need mats to wipe the soles of their shoes or at least a way to brush off shoes as they exit the grill.  Sue also offered to talk to the food service managers to clear up apparent communication issues regarding this problem.  Hall said that the grease is tracked onto the yellow floor and all the way to the restrooms.  He offered to also talk to the custodial supervisor.

New Business

OR OSHA has proposed some new rules to clarify representation issues and the make up of safety committees.  Kay does not think that the rules will affect this committee too much.

There will be a safety and health conference at Lane Community College on March 18th and 19th.  If any committee members are interested and able to get time off to attend contact Kay.

The next Safety Advisory Committee will be held at 9:00 a.m. on March 20 in the EMU Board Room.
