SAFETY ADVISORY COMMITTEE

December 13, 2007

EMU Alsea Room

Attendees:   Michelle Wygle, Steve Pelkey, Ernie Svensson, David Flock, Kay Coots, Hall O’Regan, Ernie Pressman, Michelle Gillette, Anne Mattson, Herb Horner

Accident and injury reports

The committee reviewed accident and injury reports for October and November 2007.  There was one time loss claim in October and two claims in November.

Subcommittee Reports

Inspections:  Lillis was inspected in November, and the subcommittee specifically looked at door closure issues.  Doors on both sides of the Lillis atrium are scheduled to close at a specified time due to the HVAC system energy efficiency requirements.  Upon further investigation it was found that the doors need to be programmed to close in the summer months only, and the HVAC technician at Lillis has reprogrammed them to be open the other 8 months of the year.  This new arrangement will be a big help to the custodial staff.  Ernie suggested that Don Neet could also help with programming override time.

Old Business

The 2007-08 committee appointments have not been finalized.  Kay will continue to check on progress.

Kay tried to find out more about the status of the emergency response notification system and has not yet received information for the committee.  She believes that the investigation findings are in process of going through channels and to the President’s office.

New Business

The 911 system has been upgraded on campus so that street location of buildings will display at the emergency dispatch center.  Herb said DPS still prefers that campus users dial 6-6666 to ensure that emergency responders are routed most efficiently.

Hall asked why there are two eye wash stations in one part of Hamilton and none near the kitchen.  Kay explained that only products with pH above 11 or less than 2.5 require eye wash stations.  Ideally products that fall in this range should not be used in food service and custodial operations.  Housing has a products committee that monitors purchases.  If eyewashes are installed they must be maintained, including the weekly flushing, so that contaminates do not develop in the line.

The next Safety Advisory Committee meeting will be held from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. on January 17th in the EMU Board Room.
