SAFETY ADVISORY COMMITTEE
November
16, 2006
EMU
Board Room
Attendees:
Michelle Wygle (chair), Ernie Svensson, Steve Pelkey, Tom
Hicks,
Ken Boegli,
Janice Radcliff, Mark
Maguire, Sue Martinez, David Flock, Bob Beals, Michelle Gillette,
Anne Mattson
October
minutes were
approved.
Accident and
injury reports were reviewed and discussed.
There were two time loss claims in October.
The committee requested additional
information about the
time loss claim for a Facilities Services employee who slipped in water
in an
elevator. Michelle Gillette researched
this and found that it was unclear about why the water was in the
elevator. It had not been mopped nor had
anyone been in the elevator with a bucket of water to do cleaning. It is possible that someone had a dripping
umbrella or coat in the area.
Mark recommended that the word “tunnel” in
the first
accident summary for Housing be changed to reflect that this is a
utility access
passageway between two buildings. This
area in the Living
Learning Center
is not considered part of the secured tunnel system.
Subcommittee Report
Inspection: Sue
reported
that the subcommittee conducted a very comprehensive inspection of the Living Leaning Center
on October
27. She appreciated that employees
working in the center were consulted during the inspection process.
Sue suggested that it would be helpful to
set up an
ergonomic training at 6:00 a.m. when food deliveries arrive and must be
moved
into the walk-in coolers. It is a small
area and at times a very difficult space in which to work.
Michelle Gillette will arrange for training.
Old Business
Michelle Wygle has received numerous
complaints from
people who have witnessed unsafe conditions at the Franklin Boulevard
and Onyx
Street intersection. Tom suggested that
the following people meet with him to look at this situation: Tom Larson with the City of Eugene, a
representative from LTD, Fred
Tepfer, and Janet Lobue. Ernie Svennson
and Mark Maguire volunteered to join this group. Ernie
recommended that a longer yellow light is
needed at this traffic signal.
The next Safety
Advisory Committee meeting will be held on December 21 in the EMU Board
Room from
9:00 – 10:00 a.m.
