SAFETY
ADVISORY COMMITTEE
August
17, 2006
EMU
Board Room
Attendees:
Kay Coots, Hall O’Regan, Michelle Gillette,
Anne Mattson, Ernie Pressman, Gary
Malone
Kay Coots
chaired the
meeting.
Accident and
injury reports were reviewed and discussed.
There were four time loss claims in July. Two employees have returned to work and the
other two are expected to return soon.
Ernie asked about the time loss that
occurred after a
vehicle accident. Michelle Gillette
reported
that the accident was in North
Carolina. A UO
employee was in a car traveling while at
a conference with two people from other universities.
Their car was hit head-on by a second
vehicle. Our employee was hospitalized
for several days and is currently recovering.
Gary
requested more information
about the two incidents at the University Health
Center
involving fumes in an exam room and fumes and dust from new
construction. Kay reported that issues are
being handled as
they arise. It has been a very difficult
to keep the facility open during this major construction project. There are lessons to be learned prior to the
upcoming
Villard, Education, and Music projects.
It may be necessary to consider alternatives for future
projects. Anne added that preventative measures
had been
in place, such as doing certain types of work during off hours. However, unforeseen situations have arisen.
The
project managers and the construction company have been very responsive.
A Facilities Services custodian was stuck
by a needle that
was poking out of a trash bag in one of the labs. Fortunately
the needle was not used on human
subjects. Anne asked if the labs use
safety needles. Kay feels that more could
be done to encourage their use.
Old Business
Hall reported that the sink hole has been
patched at the Hamilton
loading dock;
however the concrete pad next to the dumpster has not been fixed. This was supposed to be done at the same time,
and it is becoming very difficult for employees to access the dumpsters. Kay will talk to Gordon Melby about this
problem.
New Business
Gary
requested that contractors be reminded to arrange for a fire watch and
that it
needs to be posted for 30 minutes following hot work.
Kay said that the preconstruction conference
form is being updated, and it would help to add these hot work
procedures.
The next Safety
Advisory Committee meeting will be held in the EMU Metolius Room,
September
21st, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.
