SAFETY ADVISORY COMMITTEE
July 19, 2007

EMU Board Room

Attendees:   Kay Coots, Ernie Pressman, David Flock, Sue Martinez, Hall O’Regan, Mark Maguire, Michelle Gillette, Anne Mattson

Kay Coots chaired the meeting in Michelle Wygle’s absence.

Accident and injury reports were reviewed and discussed.

There were three time loss claims in June.

A Facilities Services employee splashed varnish and eye became irritated.  The employee was not wearing eye protection.  In this case, there was no requirement that it be worn.  The supervisor did recommend that the employee wear eye protection in the future when working with this type of varnish.

Subcommittee Reports

The Inspection Subcommittee has not received a written report from the staff following Education building inspection.  However, a verbal report was received indicating that most of the sited items have been corrected.

An inspection has been scheduled for MacCourt on August 1st at 11:00 a.m.

Old Business

Kay inspected the part of a post that had been cut off near the Living Learning Center loading dock.  She is recommending that it be removed.

New Business

Some Facilities Services employees worked on pressure washing a roof and did not realize that there was asbestos contaminated material.  In addition there were two employees occupying space in the Education trailer.  The Lane Regional Air Protection Agency (LRAPA) investigated the incident.  An outside contractor is now doing the asbestos abatement. Facilities Services maintains an inventory of all asbestos on campus.

The next Safety Advisory Committee meeting will be held from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. on August 16th in the EMU Board Room.
