SAFETY ADVISORY COMMITTEE

June 21, 2007
EMU Board Room

Attendees:   Michelle Wygle, Mary Clayton, Sue Martinez, Bob Beals, Kay Coots,  Hall O’Regan, Dave Flock, Michelle Gillette, Gary Malone, Ernie Svensson

May minutes were approved.

Accident and injury reports were reviewed and discussed.

There were four time loss claims in May.

An employee reported slipping on the stairs while entering the EMU.  David shared that they are currently working on their annual project of repainting yellow stripes on stairs to the EMU.

A Facilities Services custodial crew member received a toe contusion while pulling a compass machine over a threshold.  The committee recommended that the floor cleaning crew should be required to wear safety shoes.  Kay will talk to Jerry Dominy.

Concerns were raised that year to date SAIF claims in Facilities Services are up from 18 last year to 30 this year.  Time loss claims are up from 5 to 8.  Housing is down a little overall and other departments are also down.

Note:  After the meeting, Michelle Gillette reviewed Facilities Services claims and it did show that claims for the custodial unit are partially responsible for the increase in Facilities Services time loss claims and total claims.

Subcommittee Reports

Inspections:  The inspection report for the Department of Education will be ready Monday.  The list is long and Michelle Wygle has requested an update from the department by July.

Old Business

Oregon Hall:  Gary Malone said that he has not yet spoken with classified employees involved in the Oregon Hall indoor air quality complaint.  He shared that OR-OSHA investigator knows that the University has done a lot to improve air quality and that one or two employees may move to a different office space.

Hamilton:  Kay said that Chuck Campbell will be meeting with Tom Driscoll and Debbie Meyer on Friday to look at capacity issues in the dining and common areas.

New Business

Construction Safety:  Some committee members have recently noticed problems with noise levels and the handling of demolition materials by outside contractors.  They feel that more needs to be done to protect employees who work in and around these areas by providing proper personal protective equipment.  Sue cited an example that occurred during the Carson demolition.  Debris was thrown out a window without a chute and the area was not cordoned off.  A suggestion was made to get building managers more involved in preconstruction and planning meetings.  Kay will speak with George Bleekman about remedying these types of issues.

Living Learning Center:  Hall reported that a metal post was cut back behind the north building, east end, near the kitchen and dumpsters.  However, a quarter inch section was left behind and poses a trip and vehicle hazard.  Kay will follow up on this.

The next Safety Advisory Committee meeting will be held from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. on July 19th in the EMU Board Room.
