SAFETY ADVISORY COMMITTEE

June 15, 2006
EMU Umpqua Room

Attendees:   Michelle Wygle, Mary Clayton, Tom Hicks, Ernie Svensson, Dana Winitzky, Hall O’Regan, Avis Thompson, Ernie Pressman, Mark Maguire, Kay Coots, Michelle Gillette, Kathy Viscarra

May minutes were approved.

Accident and injury reports were reviewed and discussed.

There were zero time loss claims in May.

Subcommittee

Kay has received the publication Custodian Staffing Guidelines for Educational Facilities.  Hall, Ernie, Dana, and Kay volunteered to serve on a subcommittee to study the information.

Old Business

The OR-OSHA citation for the EMU arrived.  There was no fine for a blocked electrical panel and broken ramp rail.  Corrections were made on the day of the inspection.  The UO was cited for a missing guard on a meat and cheese slicer (the guard was ordered and installed promptly); and for not requiring workers wear hand protection when disassembling a 12-inch slicer.  The UO was reminded that OR-OSHA requires that employers provide gloves.  The citation was for $195.00.

New Business

Tom recently attended a Campus Planning Committee (CPC) meeting and offered to share some information on traffic issues in the Fairmont area.  The neighbors would like to see traffic flow routed to Agate and away from residences.  The City of Eugene has hired a transportation engineer to help devise a plan. One of the areas they are looking at is the 14th and Agate  crosswalk. Several options are under consideration such as changing the angle of the walkway; creating a Z walk area; encouraging pedestrians to use 13th or 15th Avenues; another option is to install timed traffic signals at 13th, 15th, 17th, and 18th Avenues.

Agate is designated as a minor arterial, and unfortunately is not suitable to handle that level of traffic.  CPC would like to see less traffic on Agate and a better flow east and west or 15th Avenue.

The next Safety Advisory Committee meeting will be held in the EMU Umpqua Room July 20th, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.
