SAFETY
ADVISORY COMMITTEE
April
19, 2007
Attendees:
Michelle Wygle, Kay Coots, Gary Malone, Anne
Mattson, Ernie Pressman, Mark Maguire, Ken Beogli,
Bret Ford, Mary Clayton, Ernie Svensson March minutes
were
approved with a revision in the last paragraph final sentence. The updated version will be sent via e-mail. Accident and
injury reports were reviewed and discussed. There were five time loss claims in March. After loading rags into washing machine, a custodial staff member in Housing manifested skin irritation on feet. This was caused by volatile chemicals on the rags. Bret said that a system has been set up to separate contaminated laundry Subcommittee
Reports Policy Review: The subcommittee has completed the review process. Inspection: Michelle received a response from Ron Bloom stating that items on the Gerlinger Hall inspection are being addressed. Old Business Oregon Hall: A consultant was hired to perform another evaluation of indoor air quality at Oregon Hall. That evaluation found no contaminants exceeding any applicable standards. The reports of symptoms in this case were limited to one work area of the building. Kay said that Facilities Services has made significant improvements to the building’s indoor air quality over the years. Capital funding is being requested in order to replace major system components. Onyx Kay provided an update to the task force
investigation and
report regarding safety issues at the Onyx Franklin intersection. The next step will be to involve the City of Ernie added that work this summer on the
bridge over the
Millrace will greatly impact the intersection.
Pedestrians will need to cross by the coffee shop to
access AAA. Mark pointed out that
currently fencing around
the ONAMI construction effectively helps divert pedestrian traffic in
that area. Vehicle traffic will need to
access New Business Ken shared that while waiting for the Williams Bakery sale to be finalized, DPS had posted signs stating that the lot is not UO property and park at your own risk. It was utilized at 60-70% capacity on a regular basis, and now it’s over 100%. DPS has posted new signs stating that, effective Sunday night, vehicles left overnight will be towed. It will then be barricaded so that work can be done to turn it into a temporary lot. Facilities Services will post “No-trespassing” signs on the building. Ken believes that the lot behind the thrift store will yield between 250 and 300 parking spaces after striping. Safety issues will be addressed in both lots through leveling, landscaping, general cleanup, and improved lighting. He will let the committee know as soon as there is a firm date for completion. Emergency Preparedness: Ernie Pressman asked about the committee’s role regarding campus-wide safety such as standardized plans, training, or lockdown if faced with an emergency situation such as occurred at Virginia Tech. Kay deferred to DPS as the department assigned with this responsibility. SAC’s role would be more along the lines of drafting a letter to Francis Dyke advising of concerns, offer assistance, and to propose that DPS meet with SAC regarding the status of the emergency operations plan (EOP). Several committee members shared that people in their departments expressed concern about lack of a specific plan, and they wouldn’t know what to do in such a crisis. The fact that an emergency plan exists does not help if the campus community is not aware of the plan or details therein. The next Safety Advisory
Committee meeting will be held from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. on May 17th
in the EMU Board Room. Kay Coots R.S., CSP Environmental Health and Safety Director Phone: (541) 346-5421 E-Mail: kcoots@uoregon.edu |
