SAFETY ADVISORY COMMITTEE

April 17, 2008

EMU Century F

Attendees:   Michelle Wygle, Mark Maguire, Herb Horner, Erin Seigarist, Ernie Svensson,

Steve Pelkey, Hall O’Regan, Michelle Gillette, Ernie Pressman, Anne Mattson

March minutes were approved.

Accident and injury reports were reviewed and discussed.

There were zero time loss claims in March.

Michelle Gillette spoke with Cheryl Henderson about safety procedures at ECCARES.  Cheryl said that employees are instructed not to sweep a child’s mouth to retrieve items such as play-doh.  They will consider the option of using some type of bite blocker similar to those used in a dental office.  Cheryl said that wearing long sleeve shirts is strongly recommended, and the policy has helped to cut down on employee injuries.

An injury occurred in Housing while an employee was moving heavy doors.  Michelle said that they do use a door dolly.  Steve shared that if they need a recommendation on types of stair climber dollies Brian Kimball is knowledgeable about them.  Housing is working on a system to place wheels on doors for pulling them out of storage and enable them to be stored on the upper floors.

A custodial employee on the evening shift smelled an unidentified odor in a Huestis Hall biology teaching lab on April 1.  Herb Horner said that DPS received a call regarding this incident about two hours after it occurred.  Eugene Fire Department and the hazmat team arrived.  Three employees were subsequently transported to the Sacred Heart emergency room for observation and were found to be O.K.  As required Kay provided copies of the internal incident reports to the OR-OSHA Eugene Field Office.

Old Business

Hall, Kay, and Sue met with two supervisors from Housing at Fire and Spice.  Following this meeting a boot brush was purchased.  Hall said the morning crew felt that it was working well, and he advised the evening shift employees that it had been installed for their use.

New Business

Hall asked for information about the H.P. Barnhardt lockdown on the morning of April 16th.  Herb said that a DPS dispatcher viewed information on their CAD screen indicating that an LTD commuter reported a man with a hand gun walking north down Kincaid Street.  DPS took the precaution of alerting Riley and Barnhardt staff to lock the doors and set up a perimeter while Eugene Police Department conducted a search.  No one was found matching the description.

Next Safety Advisory Committee meeting:  9:00 a.m. on May 15 in the EMU Board Room
