SAFETY
ADVISORY COMMITTEE
March
15, 2007
Attendees:
Michelle Wygle, Bob Beals, Kay Coots, Gary
Malone, Michelle Gillette, Anne Mattson, Ernie
Pressman, Mark Maguire February
minutes were
approved. Accident and
injury reports were reviewed and discussed. There were five time loss claim in February. The accidents that involved three DPS officers were actually two separate incidents. One incident involved an intoxicated subject and two officers were injured. Michelle Gillette believes that SAIF is pursuing third party liability. A custodian in Housing slipped and fell while taking trash to the dumpster near Riley Hall and sustained shoulder, hip, and back strains. Non-skid strips have subsequently been installed in the area to provide better traction. Mark suggested that a grit-based paint applied to the surface would be more durable than the strips. Subcommittee
Reports Policy Review: The subcommittee has met twice and Mark believes that one more meeting will be enough to complete the review process. Gerlinger Inspection: Michelle Wygle said she was impressed with the condition of Gerlinger Hall. The subcommittee did find a small area where there was a water leak and some mold. In the gymnasium there has been a recurring roof leak, and Kay is following up on repair issues. Anne recommended that guards be installed on the windows in the gymnasium. New Business An employee asked OR-OSHA Kay and Gary accompanied an OR-OSHA compliance officer to Oregon Hall on March 14th to investigate an indoor air quality complaint. Kay explained that the situation began last Thursday when EHS received a complaint that construction on the third floor was impacting people on the first floor. A consultant had been called in and took samples for mold, fiberglass, and dust. The compliance officer may return to interview employees on the third floor; however, he did not anticipate any fine. He also commented that the University has done more than he has ever seen anybody do in similar circumstances. Kay anticipates receiving the consultants report in about two weeks. Both hepa and carbon air filter units have been utilized without success. Currently efforts are being made to find acceptable alternate work location for the employee. The next Safety
Advisory Committee meeting will be held from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. on April
19th
