SAFETY ADVISORY COMMITTEE
February
16, 2006
EMU
Board Room
Attendees:
Michelle Wygle, Ernie Svensson, Dana
Winitzky, Anne Mattson, Hall O’Regan, Gary Malone,
Avis Thompson, Ernie Pressman, Mark Maguire, Cheryl Henderson,
Kay
Coots, Michelle Gillette, Kathy Viscarra Minutes were
approved with
one correction. In reference to the
number of time loss claims, the month of January should be changed to
December. Accident and
injury reports were reviewed and discussed. There were four time loss claims in January. Michelle Gillette reported that all four employees have returned to work. Michelle made a correction to the Facilities Services summary. The second accident lists Construction as the department, and it should read Capital Construction. In order to pinpoint patterns and determine possible safety measures, the committee members asked for statistics on injuries that resulted from slips and falls. Michelle said she could bring more detailed information to the next meeting. Subcommittee
Reports Policy Review: Mark said that the subcommittee has reviewed several policies such as Lockout/Tagout, Bloodborne Pathogens, and the Zero Energy policy. They will meet again on February 28th. Inspections: EMU The kitchens were inspected, and the subcommittee is planning to return for a second tour. Kathy reported that although a couple of problems were found, overall it was a good inspection and the areas were clean and well kept. Agate Hall Ernie reported that over ninety percent of the items have already been corrected. Old Business Kay said that she did not meet with Karen Logvin to develop a checklist regarding infants in the workplace. Over the course of several discussions and no resolution, they determined that the best course of action was to refer the issue to their supervisors, George Hecht and Linda King. Kay believes that the policy may eventually be referred to legal council. She also noted that research is underway concerning when it’s appropriate to have infants in the work environment. The committee unanimously decided to postpone further discussion for at least a month. Hall asked for an update on third shift scheduling and training. Kay has spoken with Nancy Wright and Bonnie Damewood, and she will contact Jerry Dominy for advice. Kay pointed out that Housing also provides specialized training, for example, on diversity issues. They are considering videotaping when possible and also appreciate that Environmental Health and Safety personnel are willing to come in at 6:30 a.m. to train third shift employees. New Business Kay announced that the 2006 Annual Cascade
Occupational
Safety and Health Conference will be held in Hall would like to find out what the relationship is between FTE, square footage, and workload. Ernie Pressman pointed out that the relationship between FTE and footage may not provide an accurate model since some areas require more time to clean. Buildings such as the EMU and Housing adhere to more stringent standards and therefore, require more time to clean. Kay offered to talk to Elana to find out whether the contract addresses time off and workload. She will also ask Bonnie and supervisors in other departments, such as Athletics, for the criteria they use to determine when to employ temporary or on-call custodial staff. The next Safety
Advisory Committee meeting will be held in the EMU Umpqua Room March 16th,
9:00 – 10:00 a.m. Kay Coots R.S., CSP Environmental Health and Safety Director Phone: (541) 346-5421 E-Mail: kcoots@uoregon.edu |
