SAFETY ADVISORY COMMITTEE

January 19, 2006

EMU Umpqua Room

Attendees:   Michelle Wygle, David Flock, Mary Clayton, Gary Malone, Bob Beals,
Mark Maguire, Cheryl Henderson, Kay Coots, Michelle Gillette, Kathy Viscarra

December minutes were approved.

Accident and injury reports were reviewed and discussed.

There were zero time loss claims in December.

Michelle Gillette pointed out that a fourth page has been added to the report.  It will track temporary workers.

More information was requested concerning a Facilities Services injury involving a utility knife, and why a gasket cutter was not used.  Michelle spoke with the supervisor after the meeting, and he reported that the employee was removing the oil cooler, and the old gasket was stuck in between.  The employee used a utility knife to cut the gasket loose. The supervisor advised that a gasket cutter is used for new gaskets and could not have been used in this situation.

Bob pointed out a correction to the accident summary.  Michelle will make the change to show that the shrub trimming accident occurred in the prior month when an earpiece lodged in an employee’s ear canal.   This is a SAIF claim since the employee did need to see a physician to have the piece removed.

Old Business

At the committee’s request, Kay spoke with the Work and Family Services Administrator, Karen Logvin, regarding EMU employees who are bringing their infants to work.  Karen determined that this is an acceptable situation and within the university policy guidelines.  Pursuant to this decision, the EMU experienced extensive flooding over winter break and there are concerns about mold exposure.  Human Resources revised their decision and recommended that the infants be removed from the office for their safety.  Kay will meet with Karen on February 3rd to redevelop a health and safety checklist.  She will also share the committee’s concerns about child safety, employee productivity, and liability issues.  Kay hopes that Karen will be available to attend the next SAC meeting for further discussion.

To assist parents with their childcare needs, the university provides an equipped baby room.  It is the responsibility of the employee, however, to arrange a childcare provider to care for their child.

The next Safety Advisory Committee meeting will be held in the EMU Board Room February 16th, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.
