Updates

The President’s Small Executive Staff has moved the endorsement requests agenda item to their early April meeting.

Wind Energy in the Residence Halls:  Brian is meeting with Laura Hubbard next week to discuss fee policy issues.  Charles mentioned that EWEB is now fully subscribed so we would need some assurance that enough wind generated power is available.

Green Dorm Room:    Robyn said the subcommittee needs to meet to prepare the proposal for Mike Eyster.  She will contact the group soon.

Subcommittee Reports

Recycled Paper:  Jim spoke with Harriett Merrick and reported that her staff has started to research recycled paper prices.  She was excited to hear that EIC student members are interested in working on an education project.  Karyn is going to meet with Tara Burke about earning credits for this endeavor.

Transportation:  The subcommittee met on March 16th to discuss the Heart of Campus.  Ken added that DPS has also put together a small task force to look at that area to find ways to reduce vehicle traffic and make the area safer.  Tim King suggested that EIC form a joint subcommittee with the Safety Advisory Committee (SAC).

Ken said that alternative transportation services available through DPS and their website are underutilized.  His vision is to put together a package of well thought out, well marketed alternatives to be distributed during campus tours, new student orientations, mailings, etc.  He would also eventually like to see a web site of bus schedules and park and rides available for small data devices.  Google laboratory is testing software called Google Transit, and Lane County is one of five test areas.

Smoke Free Campus:  The subcommittee developed two surveys and asked the committee to critique the one for faculty and staff.  It will be sent to a random sample of 500 employees.  Peer health educators, SHAC students and Students for a Smoke-free Campus committee, all affiliated with the University Health Center, will be tabling various places around campus to get students to complete the survey on second-hand smoke.

Earth Day on April 19th

Recycling is planning to do some education on the bottle bill, campaign on global warming and recycling, and the refillables campaign based around the idea of knowledge, awareness, and action.

Karyn asked where she could find the sustainability display board that EIC had used in the past for Earth Day.  Linda will contact Steve Mital.

Old Business

Karyn asked the committee to write a letter to support sustainable practices during the 2008 Olympic Trials event.  Charles pointed out that this would tie in perfectly with the Mayor of Eugene’s sustainability initiatives as well.  The committee would need to determine the best person to address it to.  Some key people involved in the planning are Chris Ramey and Jan Oliver, Angel (with the City), and the two co-chairs, one of which is Vin Lananna.  Jim asked Karyn to send him some talking points to use in such a letter.

The next Environmental Issues Committee meeting will be held from 10:30 – noon in the EMU Alsea room on Monday, April 16, 2007.
